Recently, I listened to an account of a woman who had a near-death experience in which she said that she was shown how everything in life was made up of equations and mathematical formulas. I was fascinated how she explained that even a little bug crawling across the ground- involved math. She mentioned that to most observers the world looks like it is in chaos, but her experience demonstrated to her that everything is actually very organized, orderly, and perfect. She even saw that suffering was perfect. As I pondered on this I realized that God’s mathematics not only involves our outer surroundings, but also concerns our inner selves, and the perfection that the Lord is creating within us.
Divine Equations
There are numerous simple equations that are true for all of us. There is order in the Universe that governs us even if we don’t realize it. The following are a few examples:

No amount of negativity added to negativity can ever produce a positive result. If we do bad things, bad will come back to us. “He that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him.” (Prov. 11:27) “…then if they shall harden their hearts against me I will return their iniquities upon their own heads, saith the Father.” (3 Nephi 20:28) It’s one of the most relentless laws of Heavenly calculation.
Have you noticed that complainers don’t prosper? The energy of complaining is low, and no problem can be solved while maintaining that level. How many people are “stuck” in their lives because they choose to focus on their undesirable situations rather than lift themselves above them? Low spiritual levels can only be transcended by acquiring additional light.
Complaining and negativity keep us jammed in the muck, and the more we complain to others about our situation, the more we become validated in our thinking. Alma states, “…they brought upon themselves the curse; and even so doth every man that is cursed bring upon himself his own condemnation.” (Alma 3:19).
Pity parties give us a warped sense of satisfaction in the telling, and have a powerful downward thrust. It takes something with power to lift us out of that mire. There IS a stronger force in the Universe…

When we learn to stop focusing on the negative, and begin instead to focus on God and everything we are thankful for, amazing things begin to expand within us! Thanking the Lord for whatever situation we are in, is the first step for Him to reach down and lift us up to His realm. It can change our spiritual environment very quickly when we put our attention on it.
The Lord gives a profound formula that tells us that when we are grateful for whatever lies in our path, He will magnify good in our lives 100 times. “And he who receiveth ALL things with thankfulness shall be made glorious: and the things of this earth shall be added unto him, even an hundred fold, yea, more.” (D & C 78:19)
Jesus taught this principle with a very specific equation and application when he fed the 5000. It is this: 5 + 2 = 5000 r. 12. (5 loaves, and 2 fishes were expanded enough to feed over 5000 people with 12 baskets of leftovers) God’s arithmetic is always incredibly generous in its outcome. The scripture simply states that Jesus gave “thanks,” (John 6:11) and from Him, this gratitude and praise caused molecular change in the food that fed over 5000 people. They were all filled that day spiritually and physically, as well as being raised to a new plane. We also can expand outward and upward when we praise and give thanks. There is nothing that moves us forward and upward quicker or with greater force. What grand calculation will the Lord be willing to do for US when WE give thanks?
- HUMILITY + FAITH + PRAYER + FASTING = MIRACLES!
There are many formulas for miracles, but this one is pretty basic. Think about the times in your life where God has intervened and given you a miracle. Most likely these elements were there. When we fast, it is like putting a 10th power to our prayers. When our hearts are broken and we have the exact amount of humility, the Lord can and will work with us. Do you have the right inner ingredients for a miracle?
There are also many “If this, then that; (If you do x then y will happen.) These are principles that are based on spiritual algorithms, and allow the Lord to shower us with blessings.
- WHEN YOU ASK – YOU WILL RECEIVE!
The scriptures are filled with this theme. They are promises from the Most High God! What are we not asking for that we could be receiving? We may not receive the exact thing we asked for, but be assured, we will receive the very thing the Lord wants to give us! His math and timing are perfect! It could be that the thing we ask for, is not what we need for our best growth, but if we ask, He will open up or unlock something that we DO need. Asking with a positive expectation opens doors to beautiful things. We always get exactly what we ask for, when we pray in faith,– OR SOMETHING BETTER!
In the eternal equation – positive always raises us up and negative always pushes us down. The more we exert our Faith, the more we tie into the power of the God of the Universe. THIS is the power he wants us to ask for and receive.
The Cosmos is extremely well organized. All of God’s creations are mathematically created and maintained, both in their inner and outer worlds. When we break a law of God, certain things will happen. When we receive any blessing, it is because we have utilized a spiritual formula He has given us. The Lord reveals to us that, “There is a law irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundations of this world, upon which all blessings are predicated- And when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated.” (D & C 130:20-21) All blessings and miracles come only after certain requirements of obedience, gratitude, faith or softening of the heart have been met.
God has given us many promises of realities He will give us when we follow the divine equations that He has established. What equation of the Higher Power do you need today?
